The Department of Students Welfare functions for the overall benefit and welfare of the student community of the University. The Department fully address the social and Academic concerns of students via interaction in different forms.
Various Units and Activities
Annual Students Magazine
The Department publishes an annual magazine “Gulala”, which contains various literary and research articles written by students, teachers and research scholars. The magazine promotes the art and habit of writing among the students of the University.
Red Cross Unit
The Red Cross Unit stands for the humanitarian assistance programme, executed through University Volunteers. The Unit keeps close liaison with IRCS, J&K Chapter and jointly organizes various programmes, workshops and blood donation camps and other related programmes at the campus
Student’s Grievance Cell
Student’s Grievance Cell looks after the grievances of the students and act as a bridge between the University authorities and the students.
Special Cell for Specially Challenged Students
The cell provides facilities for specially challenged students within and outside the university system, which help them to ensure a dignified and respectable status and carrier after the completion of their studies .One of the prime concerns of the cell is also to sensitize the civil society about the variegated problems and the challenges faced by the special category of our society.
Cultural Club, has been constituted with its components as Literary Club, Drama Club and Art Club. The Club organizes various activities including Seminars, Debates, Elocutions, Creative Writing Competitions, Fine Arts, Theatre Events, Youth Festivals, Cultural/Literary Tours, Youth Exchange Programmes at Local, Zonal, National & International level.
KU Red Ribbon Club
The main aim of the Club is sensitization and awareness of masses about HIV/AIDS through various interaction programmes.The Club also organises blood donation camps.
The Department also arranges the educational tours for the students to visit various centres of excellence outside the valley. The students have great learning experience by interacting with the students and thie faculty members of other institutions.s

Debating Competition, Poetry Competitions
Four students of KU Cultural Club visited China, under the youth exchange programme, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India in 2008.
Two students of Cultural Club participated in Global Students Leaders Programme organized by US Department of States , Govt. of USA. The students Visited Green River Community College, Seattle and University of Alabama, Huntsville.
Future Plan of the Department:
As the prime objective of the Department it stands for the Welfare of the Students and to offer them a conducive environment to express their innate creative talent by way of organizing wide variety of programmes. The Department intends to widen its role by way of initiating different collaborative programmes with organizations like Indian Red Cross Society, State Women’s Commission, Department of Social Welfare, State Rehabilitation Centre, Health Department, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Doordarshan Kendra, Radio Kashmir, Directorate of Information, Indian Institute of Public Administration, etc. the department is also exploring the possibilities of networking at National and Inter-national level.
